About Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science became operational in 1999 with the mandate to teach Basic Sciences courses, Mathematics, Statistics and Communication Skills. Currently the Faculty of Science has six operating departments which are: Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Biometry and Mathematics, Department of Education Department of Informatics, Department of Physical Sciences and Department of Social Sciences. Each department provides a range of services supporting the primary function of faculty and the University as a whole. The Faculty of Science is well with the Modern Laboratories for Biological sciences, Physical sciences, Meteorological Sciences and Computer. The Faculty is also equipped with the Standard Meteorological Weather Station at Solomon Mahlangu campus.
The departments are headed by the head of department and their all responsible to the Dean of Faculty. The Faculty Dean links the Faculty to the Sokoine University of Agriculture high authority through Faculty board, Deputy Vice Chancellor (academic) and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Admin. and Finance). Moreover, the Faculty Dean is a member in different organs that lead the university e.g. University Council, Senate, Deans and Directors committee etc. Also the Head of departments and other staff member are the representatives in different university high authority organs.
The Mandate of the Faculty
In fulfilling the Vision and Mission of the University, the Faculty of Science’s mandate are to:
· Conduct the teaching of Basic Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics and Communication Skills at the University;
· Undertake and collaborate with other Faculties/Institutes/Centres within and outside the University in research, extension and consultancy in Basic and/ or Applied Sciences,
· Produce Science teachers and tutors for Secondary schools and colleges (Teacher Training colleges, Agricultural Colleges, Computer Colleges, etc)
· Design, develop and establish new degree programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in various fields of science and technology, make recommendations to Senate on matters pertaining to academic, research, extension and consultancy and offer advisory services within and outside the University.
